Just after we purchased 3d laser scanner Riegl VZ-400 we ventured to do 3d laser scanning of a telecom tower in Kraków – Podgorze, Poland. This object is 62 meter high and was built in 1965, it is a property of TP EmiTel. We have done very similar project hds laser scanning of a telecom tower in Scotland, this was only a test project aimed to check scanner performance and possibly show the results to the owner company. There are many advantages of using 3d laser scanner to measure this kind of object: We received a huge amount of data in such a short time ( the whole measurement took 6 hours),
long distance from scanning object (few scan positions were 200 meters from the tower), no need to switch off telecom equipment ( it would be impossible if we surveyed it using traditional methods), final point cloud was used for 3d modeling in Cad, uploaded directly to software used by designers of transmitters and other telecom equipments. It is also possible to integrate many point clouds or 3d models of towers into one coordinates system by integrating 3d laser scanning with GPS measurements.
