In October 2010 in cooperation with Krakow University of Technology we made a experimental survey of the railway infrastructure facilities at the Słomniki station. The purpose of the measurements was to determine the feasibility of 3d laser scanning for verifying the gauge consistency of tracks. We used a Riegl VZ-400 3D laser scanner with a scan range of up to 500 meters. All data (represented as point clouds) were registered into one coordinate system. Medium registration error / point cloud fitting was ± 5mm.
One main advantage of 3D laser scanning is the speed and precision with which we can take measurements. Scanning produces a continuous representation of the measured area, making a complete and easily transmittable record which can be used for a variety of applications from design to repair to planning. Another advantage of laser scanning is that we can make all the measurements without stopping the train.
